Domain Name, Tech, And Is This Domain For Sale
Back in the ’70s when I was in art school in Pittsburgh, I received the nickname kimba from a fellow student and it stuck. I think it was because of Kimba The White Lion – the diplomat of the jungle. He was always trying to bring opposing parties together, at least that’s how I remember him. Back in the day I was not a clique-ish person, and always invited everyone to parties and events, bringing everyone together.
Fast forward to 1995.
The internet had just opened up to the greater world, outside of the science and educational realm, and I was doing a little systems administration work for a friend. Something I did for a little while to support the art career … This particular friend was working on the BIND and DHCP projects at the ISC and through him I had access to registering domains when that all became available. In May of 1995 I registered this domain, KIMBA.COM, and the rest is history. The domain was in the first group of 7,000 domains registered on the web – now there are over 650-million domains registered worldwide.
And it wasn’t without a bit of brouhaha, given that the folks at the ISC were not happy that people, especially people who worked for them, were registering their “own name” domains. The web/internet wasn’t meant to work that way. The initial intention was that big companies would register their domains, and then people could become twiddles (these are no longer used), or subdirectories, or subdomains, of those larger companies. Whelp, it was evident early on that wasn’t the way it was going to play out.
So, yes. I can take the blame for IPv6.
It’s a legacy domain name, one with an internet history, and one that I’ve owned continuously since 1995.
Tech
This domain is the one on which I learned to program HTML and then all the other things. It started out back in the day when we still thought about how much disk space we were using on the web server and began as a basic HTML site. It went through a number of iterations through the decades, and is now a simple self hosted web site, running WordPress, and using Imagely themes and NexGen galleries.
Is This Domain For Sale
There have been quite a few inquiries over the past year asking if I will sell the domain. That’s a complicated question to answer, as I know its value. It’s a legacy domain. It has a historical story. It’s had one owner for almost 30-years. All of this gives it value.
It’s also my identity.
I’m not looking to sell it. And it would take A LOT to get it away from me. There would be negotiations. Big negotiations.
But yes, you can ask.
